473 mL can, day 1 of the 2022 Toronto Brewing beer advent calendar. No canning date; served slightly chilled.
Pours a turbid, milky pale straw colour, initially crowned with an inch of smooth, foamy white head that dissipates within five minutes or so. An even coat of sticky lace is deposited onto the glass, with a sudsy collar and cap staying in place - looks fine to me. It's quite aromatic - I'm getting mango, orange and pineapple, with suggestions of oats, papaya and floral, grassy hops.
Not bad at all - pineapple, tangerine and mango come through at first, backed up by grainy wheat and light oatmeal sweetness. Grapefruit pithiness develops later on, with floral hop bitterness and spiciness peaking at the finish; hints of tropical fruit and grassiness linger into a slightly astringent, drying aftertaste. Medium in body, with lively carbonation that gives some bite to this brew's soft, fluffy mouthfeel. Fair drinkability - one can is easy enough to finish, but I'm ready to move on to something else.
Final Grade: 3.94, a B+. Sequence is described as an "IPA series", with this first entry including two kinds of hops that I am generally a big fan of. It smells great, and the front end of the sip is delicious, but that finish is not really what I'm looking for in a hazy IPA. Of course, that's not a dealbreaker or anything: I still think this is a very well-made pale ale, and would love to try some more AMF brews in the future. Cheers to three (and a half) weeks of new beers to try!
