my first from these guys, are they new? i do not recall them from my time in colorado. anyhow, this is a neat beer, a clean saison with lemongrass and hibiscus, pretty ambitious really, and its kind of amateurish in a good way, like the kind of attention to detail that can only come from a super small batch and someone meticulously working to understand the import and possibilities of each step in the process, not that this is epic in terms of quality or anything, but i can tell whoever made it really cares. im not a huge clean saison guy, give me some brett, a rustic or wild element, but this works pretty well. the lemongrass and hibiscus are subtle, the hibiscus barely even colors the brew, but they give it an herbal freshness that makes up for a lack of a more interesting ferment, they hit in the same place, adding some nuance to a pretty simple wheaty and pale barley malt base and compliment the pear and white wine notes coming from this more or less familiar yeast strain. it could be a little lighter in body, and it could certainly use a little more carbonation, this is a neat recipe, seems authentic with the extras too, but a little more refinement would bring it up a level. i like the floral springy nature of the flavor, even though the sturdy malt, and i think this has a lot of promise. fun beer.
