Our gift to Princess Therese, this traditional hefeweizen is made with malted and unmalted wheat with a touch of German hops. The result is light and crisp with a subtle tartness and a moderate ester profile of banana and clove from fermentation. It’s an appropriate tribute to the scientist and travel writer, Princess Therese of Bavaria, whose marriage prompted the celebration on the fields of Theresienwiese that became Oktoberfest.

Straight from the tap at the brewery.
Not much on the nose.
Not huge amount of tasting notes either. Stereotypical notes. Banana and clove I suppose. It’s super refreshing though.

Appearance: Cloudy straw yellow. Fluffy white head with moderate retention.
Aroma: Low ester aromas. Mostly clove with a hint of banana at the start.
Flavor & Aftertaste: Spicy hops, clove. Low bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Light bodied. Somewhat soft - call it semi-drying. Lingering bitterness in finish. High carbonation.
Overall: Canned version. Performed a side by side with some German imports and another local favorite to help evaluate. Both this and the other local fell short on visual with both having short to medium head retention. This one has expected yeasty esters but comes with an added graininess in aroma and flavor I found appealing. It has some bitterness that most hefe's don't, but it is not offensive or off putting. It's not as soft in mouthfeel as German versions but finishes nice and dry. An excellent effort from my local brewery. Not sure how they can improve the head retention but that would greatly approve the appeal.
I am a little disappointed in that I had the draft version at the brewery and thought it was quite good. The canned version seems to vary. Looks the part, except head retention is medium (should be better). Spicy hops and clove esters in aroma and flavor but the bitterness is too much. While it seems light bodied, it drinks sweeter and a little heavy. Need to revisit this with some German versions.
