33 cl brown glass bottle coded “Best before/Lot number L12821 11/23”
€1,79 @ Carrefour, San Pablo, Sevilla, ES
Notes via stream of consciousness: I saw this on clearance at Aldi but thought it would be a bad idea to try it less than fresh and here it turns out I’ve purchased an old bottle anyway. It’s brewed with water, malted barley, malted wheat, flaked barley, hops, olive extract (oil), an infusion of olives and olive leaves, spirulina, and yeast. This bottle is labeled at 5.5% ABV. It’s poured a clear yellow-green body beneath a short head of white that drops shortly, no doubt due to the oils from the olives. The aroma is limited but clean; I really only get a lightly sweetish and grainy maltiness out of it. The flavor, however, brings in a little bit of an olive oil flavor. It’s got some spiciness to it, and that lingers in the finish like it does with good olive oil, and a light fruitiness. There’s also an actual olive taste to it, although it’s minor; whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing I don’t know. I’ve just spent time in Jaume (where this is made) smelling the harvest/processing going on and tasting the different varieties of olive oil so it works for me. I don’t think it’s really strong enough that most people who are less familiar with olive oil than me, or even those who dislike olives would find it off putting. There’s not a lot of bitterness to it but it still finishes mainly dry with that delicate spiciness lingering. In the mouth it’s medium bodied and smooth with a fine-bubbled, median carbonation. Overall this is very much a basic pale Euro beer but the subtle nuances elevate it.

330 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 5.5%. Clear and pale green colour (yes, really!), moderate off-white head with a greenish hue. Aroma of vegetables, olive leaves and mild spices. Thin mouthfeel. Flavour with the same elements as the aroma, hardly any bitterness. Boring beer, won't buy again.
