another clever and delicious beer from these guys, making quite the impression on me. this one apparently inspired by some buckwheat chocolate cookies, not sure if there is actually chocolate in this or not, or if its the unique malt build pushing the flavor profile in that direction, but the beer overall is excellent. light for a brown ale, some reddish edges to this, a short tan head on it of tiny bubbles, looks attractive. the nose is neat, nutty earthy grain, less sweet than anticipated, with a definite chocolate malt middle but very little supporting caramelized type grain character, instead its drier, lightly spicy like rye, maybe ever so slightly tannic, and with cocoa, hazelnut, and fresh baked vibes, sort of agricultural too, not sure i can say i smell buckwheat, but that there is something unconventional in this seems obvious. the flavor is similar, a little bit of a molasses thing up front, then some neat almost raisin or date, then the dark chocolate and dry baking cocoa, some light roasted bitterness too, but this element is pretty subtle. high carbonation, lighter medium body, pretty dry to close for what this is, minerals, mixed nuts, faint toffee, maybe a little breadiness from the yeast too, toast. nice beer, unique in the brown ale space, i love browns that have some malt wrinkle to them like this, really hits for the fall time. need to get my lips on more from these guys, ive liked both of them ive tried so far a lot, seems like they do a lot of inspired stuff here!
