2021 Ontario Brewing Award Winner — Pale Malty European Lager
Our award-winning Traditional German floor-malted Pilsner malt and Bavarian-grown Hallertau Mittelfrüh hops provide moderate bitterness to balance a rich malt, while its crisp, clean finish comes from weeks of cold lagering.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From the Huron Church Rd. LCBO in nearby Windsor. No date stamp or lot number. My 4th beer from the Waterloo, Ontario brewery, and 2nd for 2025. Lovingly embraced by Sundae the cat...

Poured a 473ml can into a mug. A two finger fine white head on a clear gold. Excellent head retention. Lots of lacing.
Bready malts in the nose. the taste follows the nose. bready malts up front. Sweet. A moderate hop finish.
Medium body and carbonation. Smooth and well balanced. An excellent Festbier. I prefer Marzens for my Oktoberfest needs. Although a Festbier, it leans Marzen. Well worth a try.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Aug 27 2024 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear medium gold colour, producing half an inch of dense, foamy white head that settles off within the next two minutes. A generous collar of sudsy froth remains in place around a patchy cap, with a narrow, even band of lace clinging to the glass - looks good so far. Grainy, bready pilsner malts on the nose, with spicy, floral hops and maybe a touch of orange peel & honey. Not an exciting aroma, but it's clean, wholesome and appropriate for the style.
The same can be said of the flavour profile: I'm getting grainy malts, bread and light honey sweetness, with citrusy hints of orange peel. Noble hops impart floral, herbal, slightly spicy notes towards the finish; slightly more bitterness than I tend to expect from this style, but I'm fine with that. Spicy, grainy aftertaste that fades to off-dry. Light in body, with moderately assertive carbonation that adds a crisp bite to this lager's smooth mouthfeel. Very easy to gulp back; I certainly wouldn't mind a refill.
Final Grade: 3.81, a B+. Stockyards' Festbier is a quality lager that is sure to appeal to a majority of German beer fans. It does have some pilsner-like qualities, and is perhaps a tad bit hoppier than your average festbier - not that I'm complaining. A pleasant surprise: it's not the most impressive Ontario festbier I've come across, but I do think it's a darn solid one. Worth a try, and something I'd be buying more of, if it were available locally.

On Tap @ the brewery - this is a helles festbier, not the amber Marzen usually associated with Oktoberfest, There is no category listing for this (no it's not a fest weizenbier) so it may be a misnomer to call it an Oktoberfest Marzen, but it is a good representation of the helles festbier common in the Munich Oktoberfest beer tents......pours a clouded pale gold with a 3 finger puffy cap...Aromas of bready malts with herbal Hallertau hopping undertones and earthiness....character is soft on the palate, deeply well rounded and smooth, rich in malts but not sweet....flavor has bready malts in front then a decent herbal earthiness...finish is rich but drying with detectable increased bittering....extremely smooth, well conditioned and satisfying and very drinkable
