a delicious black rye based ipa that tastes and feels a lot like firestones old wookey jack, a classic even iconic beer that i wish still existed. in any event, they nailed this, the better of the two beers i had in here although both were good. its shiny but not as dark as black in the glass, some reddish edges and high clarity, a frothy lathery off white head rests on top. it smells rye forward, dry earthy and spicy there, with lots of roast behind it, light coffee, raisin, and maple notes too. the hops are big and piney, northwestern and higher alpha and liberally dosed here, fresh as can be from the tap, really a complex and exciting nose on this. the rye is evident in the flavor, lightly peppery to me and awesome wrapped up in the roasted grains and chocolate malt. the hops drive this though, have some spice of their own, and drip with fresh spruce and juniper character, slightly oily on the palate which works here, lighter bodied overall than a lot of these too, doesnt feel heavy or strong to me, and the hop linger with the dark malt and the rye is a killer mix of flavors, i dont wish this were any drier. overall very good beer in a style that is long due for a comeback. this place was rad.
