i was super stoked on the low abv on so much of the beer we drank in scotland, something about being able to drink all day every day and not be wasted or hungover is a joy, and this modern brewery is doing some cool beers in this session space, an awesome spot off the main drag in leith, way cool. lightly hazy, a little richer color to it than is trendy in the states, not unexpected. not a big head holder, but some patchy white froth on it and some lace as it drinks. it smells balanced, nelson is identifiable but there is a european yeast element in play too and some fuller character barley, i like all the elements contributing, it smells pretty basic, fresh, and very much like a pale ale. the nelson is balanced in the flavor, bitterness is really low, and this isnt boundary pushing at all, but its good. the grain has some honey and some toast, more body than expected at this abv too. nelson brings soft melon and grassy notes rather than high tone florals and white wine to me, a little more chill than it an often be, i dont mind that in this. its off dry, not super bubbly, and drinkable without demanding a ton of analysis really, its a modern hopped kind of old school pale that works in just about any beer context, and it was cool to chill in their lofted taproom above their brew house and take one down! very cool aesthetic here, some clever beer, all very drinkable.
