Had Rack & Piñon at Junkyard on 66, Grants, New Mexico, on draft into Willi Becher.
Pours light gold with clarity and 1/2-finger near-white head, which soon dissipates to a persistent ring, leaving a few specks of lace. Aroma of mild chocolate and caramel off the pour, and continuing, joined by some Noble hop spice as warms. Begins nicely bitter, and then mild chocolate, leading into a solid, subtle pilsner malt, and a bit of caramel, and a bit of nuttiness, before a clean, somewhat fruity finish.
If I had known what piñon was, I might not have tried this beer, but I am glad I did. Junkyard on 66's flagship beer is a refreshing introduction to New Mexican culture, providing subtle flavors of chocolate and caramel-covered piñon nuts without overwhelming this very interesting lager.
