Appearance: Poured with two fingers of head that did manage to stick around for a while and produce a lace ring and a few other islands on the side of the glass. The body is a cloudy yellow although not quite opaque, which showcases ample, aggressive carbonation. More retention, more lace and more cloud would earn the perfect here.
Smell: Banana and barley malt with floral hop notes and I think I'm catching a bit of passionfruit and mild citrus as well. It smells let I just walked into a tropical orchard, but like said orchard did need warmth to come out as it was quite sedate fresh off the pour.
Taste: That banana and barley malt starts us out with maybe a mild lemon citrus note before the barley is left to contend with a mix of hops that seems to contend with each other enough to limit their scope as much as it contends with the rest of the beer. I'm being a bit generous here as the beer is labelled a "Hopfenweisse" and Hefeweizen [remix] on the can, but this level of hops while it made a great nose, kind of kills the hefe aspects. Grapefruit, earth and floral I can find hints of, but it's a bit of a mess of an end. As the beer nears the end the lemon note is replaced with a more passionfruit like taste that tries to stand with the barley but can't do it.
Mouthfeel: The carbonation of this beer is great, giving it a sudsy quality, and the aftertaste is fairly clean and floral and slightly dry citrus notes leave things fairly mellow. The transitioning I suppose isn't bad, except that hopped garble log jam at the end. I'd prefer my hefe to not be quite this dry and have a banana or clove character but again, they did state it was hoppier.
Drinkability: Despite that last note, this beer is fairly easy to put back and easy to drink. Medium body and easy on the system. Refreshing and really something catered to the start or the dog days of summer.
Final Thoughts: Had this beer not written "Hopfenweisse" on the side of the can, it would have fared as well as it did. I don't know if there is a case for making that its own beer style, but here the presence of the hops did some interesting things which I do applaud, even if I wouldn't call it a more typical or traditional hefe.
