473 mL can from the brewery; dated Sep 10 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear copper-brown colour, topped with one finger of lumpy, foamy, off white-coloured head that lasts for three or four minutes. It splashes a messy ring of lace about in the process, soon reduced to a frothy collar and filmy cap - looks good so far. Caramelized sugars on the nose, alongside some doughy, bready malt notes and a hint of spicy noble hops.
A pleasant strong lager with no shortage of malt flavour: I'm getting doughy malts, toasted biscuit and lots of caramel at the forefront, with suggestions of toasted nuts by mid-sip. More caramel and biscuit into the tail end, as well as a few hints of floral, peppery hops; the aftertaste trends from caramel-sweet towards more of a toasty off-dryness. The alcohol is a very minor factor, but over time you start to notice it. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that feels prickly on the tongue, adding crispness to this lager's smooth, satisfying mouthfeel. Easy to drink, but a little too sweet & strong to be drinking in multiples.
Final Grade: 3.71, a B grade. I don't know if I'd call Black Gold's Lederhosen an exceptional märzen, but it's a pretty good amber-type lager that will almost certainly appeal to fans of that sort of thing. Not a beer I'd seek out specifically, but if I'm in Petrolia next autumn I'd probably grab another pair of cans. This reference is a stretch, but I'm committing to it anyhow: it's way better than that Rickard's Lederhosen from (not quite) ten years ago. Man, does time fly or what?
