Rich caramel maltiness with notes of roasted barley and fresh baguette. Low hop presence with a smooth creamy finish for a taste of the Emerald Isle. 22 IBU

Poured a 473ml can into a pint glass. A two finger bubbly tan head on a clear reddish brown. the head diminishes to a ring. Some thin, patchy lacing.

Malty smells. Tastes of caramel and biscuit. Sweet. a very mild hop finish.

Mouthfeel is very smooth and creamy. medium body and carbonation. Overall a fine red ale. very drinkable.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, from the University Ave. West LCBO in nearby downtown Windsor. My first beer from the Petrolia, Ontario brewery.

Pours a clear amber color with a creamy light tan head that provides a nice bit of lacing. Beautiful beer. The nose is focused on the malt, with toffee and roasted grains, plus a smidge of floral hop notes.

The taste is likewise all about the malt, with the toffee flavors leading and the roasted grain providing an almost nutty flavor that is really nice. The mouthfeel is medium which works for this beer.

473 mL can from the brewery; dated Aug 12 2022 and served slightly chilled.

Pours copper amber with brilliant clarity; situated atop are two fingers of foamy, puffy, off white-tinged head that lasts for five minutes or so. A creamy collar and filmy cap live on, with a messy, ringed coat of lace flung about in its wake - looks fantastic so far. Malty sweetness on the nose - I'm getting toasted bread, toffee, roasted grains and baked apples, with faint suggestions of leafy hops.

A little on the sweet side, but that's nothing unusual for an Irish red - it tastes of caramel, baked apples, toasted grains and bread, with hints of marshmallow fluff. Roasted grains, bread and light caramel sweetness round out the back end, with hints of orchard fruit and leafy hops popping up briefly in the aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with low carbonation that limply brushes against the surface of the tongue, resulting in a smooth, slick, relatively flat mouthfeel that works OK with this style. Very easy to toss back, and enjoyable enough to do so.

Tallboy from the LCBO; dated Jun 20 2025. Revisiting this one for posterity. Black Gold made a smart choice when they submitted this as their first LCBO SKU: Irish reds are few and far between, and solid examples of the style are even fewer and further. This one is better attenuated than most reds, making for a more balanced and enjoyable red ale with real session potential. I am bumping its grade a bit, to reflect how impressed I am with this beer.

Final Grade: 3.77, a B+
