473 mL can from the brewpub; dated Aug 12 2022 and served slightly chilled. Named after a local tavern that sadly closed its doors last year.

Pours a mostly clear golden-yellow, kicking up more than an inch of foamy, soapy white head that dissipates within three or four minutes. It leaves behind a curtain of sticky lace, as well as a sudsy cap and collar - looks good to me. A little piney on the nose, with hints of bready malt, lemon zest and melon.

A quality light pale ale - citrusy at first, with lemon and grapefruit backed by a bready, grainy pale malt sweetness that lasts throughout the sip. Pine and floral, earthy hop bitterness develop towards the finish, fading into a mildly bitter, resiny aftertaste with hints of marmalade. Light in body, with moderately low carbonation that supplies some crispness to this brew's smooth mouthfeel; a very nice session IPA all around.

Final Grade: 3.76, a B+. Session IPAs have never been my cup of tea, but I've had enough of them to know the difference between a good one and a bad one - and Session at the Squire falls squarely in the 'good' pile. The hop flavours and aromas are nice enough, but this one's saving grace is that (unlike many session IPAs) it doesn't neglect the malt side of the equation. Balanced and quaffable, like a light pub ale should be - good stuff, worth a look if you're stopping by the brewery.
