473 mL can from the brewery, part of their Discovery Series of small batch beers. Coded 0785 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a relatively clear golden-blonde colour, kicking up an inch of smooth, foamy white head that dissipates within five minutes or so. An attractive curtain of ringed lace adheres to the glass, with a frothy collar and filmy cap being the eventual remnants. Big, roasty coffee bean aromas, with lesser notes of fresh grass clippings, sourdough bread and earthy, leafy hops.
It's good - the coffee flavours are strong, but they also obscure the various subtleties that this blonde ale has to offer. Hints of grain & sourdough, with suggestions of orange oil and tea leafy hops; the coffee grounds are a continuous, earthy, moderately bitter presence that last briefly into the aftertaste, which is slightly vegetal. Light in body, with moderate carbonation that gently rolls across the tongue; feels very smooth and satisfying, with fantastic drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.85, a B+. Black Gold's Coffee Blonde widened my eyes, quite literally - maybe it's just a psychological side effect, but this brew really did perk me up. I'd take this over their Three Blondes, but that's mostly because of the coffee factor - I think I might be addicted to that stuff. Worth adding to their year-round lineup, or at least bringing back as a seasonal.
