473 mL can from the brewery; dated Nov 18 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy, effervescent copper-amber colour, producing at least two fingers of puffy, soapy off-white head that settles off within five minutes or so. A tight ring of even lace sticks to the glass, hanging above a foamy quarter-inch cap of suds - lookin' good so far. The aroma is malty, offering up notes of toffee, caramelized sugars, root beer and wheaty, doughy malts; suggestions of dried dark fruit and earthiness.
The flavour profile starts off sweet and stays that way: brown sugar/caramel at the forefront, then hints of toasted bread, doughy malt, wheat and golden treacle by mid-sip. Suggestions of bubble gum on the back end, with more toasted wheat and caramel lasting through the finish and into a malty aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with moderate carbonation that exhausts itself quickly - the mouthfeel goes from crisp & prickly, to slick & flat over the course of the glass, i.e. the first half was way more enjoyable than the bottom.
Final Grade: 3.5, on the edge of a B grade. Oiler's Daughter is a decent American wheat beer, but it's a poorly balanced one - this is just all sweet, all the time. It's essentially an American amber ale with lots of wheat added to the mix, and I expect fans of malt-forward ambers will appreciate this brew more than most. I'd drink this again, but there are other Black Gold brews I'd reach for first.
