473 mL can from the brewery; coded 0820 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a relatively clear golden-yellow colour, with more than two fingers of creamy, foamy white head rising from the surface. Within several minutes, it has been worn down to a tight collar and filmy cap, with some messy lace tossed about behind it. Overripe banana, banana bread and banana candy on the nose - did I mention banana? There are also hints of brown sugar, clove spice and wheat.
A little sweeter than I'd like from a hefeweizen, but it's still competently done: I'm getting brown sugar, overripe/brown bananas and wheat bread, with spicier, yeastier notes cropping up on the back end. Clove, pepper and bubblegum, with banana bread and a medicinal note dissipating into a wheaty, malty aftertaste that trends off-dry. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that adds a decent bite to this wheat beer's smooth, somewhat silky mouthfeel; good drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.55, a B grade. Black Gold Hefeweizen is a serviceable German-style wheat beer that hit the spot on a mild June night. The banana esters are a little overdone IMO, but that's mostly a personal preference: while I have always appreciated hefes, the banana-heavy examples do not usually rate highly for me. I'm still glad I tried this beer... no, it's not as good as most of the German stuff you can find at the LCBO, but I enjoyed my glass and I'd drink it again.
