473 mL can from the brewery; coded 0897 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear copper-amber hue, producing nearly two fingers of soapy, foamy, off white-coloured head that fades within a matter of minutes. It imprints a delicate, doily-patterned coat of lace onto the glass as it recedes, with a sudsy, patchy cap and frothy collar lasting on. Malty, slightly nutty aroma that includes hints of toasted bread, toffee and earthy, herbal hops.
Not bad at all - mellow, slightly sweet flavour profile characterized mainly by German malts. I'm tasting lightly caramelized sugars, grains, toasted bread and nuttiness, with some earthy, herbal/spicy noble hops joining the fray later on; the hops linger briefly into a malty, nutty aftertaste that falls off quickly. Light in body, with low carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel, as well as great drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.74, a B grade. While I do enjoy plenty of varieties of lager, I'm sad to say that Vienna lagers have never been a huge draw for me. Black Gold's take on the style is a fairly solid effort, delivering more or less what I expect out of this style without any significant issues arising. I'd drink it once in a while if it were more readily available, but it's not a brew I'd search high and low for.
