Rich malt flavour with lightly toasted, doughy notes and a smooth bitterness all put together to make this easy drinking German lager. Prost! 22 IBU

473 mL can from the brewery; coded FEST1044 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear, brassy golden-amber colour, giving rise to nearly one finger of loose, soapy white head that lasts for ninety seconds or so. A frothy collar and filmy cap stay in place; minimal lace at first, but there's some deposition as you sip at the glass. It smells of toasted grains, doughy malts and freshly baked bread, with suggestions of bran flakes, Werther's and leafy hops.
It's a pretty decent lager - no real surprises, just clean, moderately sweet malt flavours. Toasted grain, bread dough and bran cereal, as well as hints of caramelized sugars and some biscuity sweetness. Finishes malty with a hint of earthy, leafy hop bitterness receding into an aftertaste of biscuits and cereal grain. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that provides a little bit of crispness to this lager's smooth, satisfying mouthfeel. Very crushable at 5.7% - I could go for another glass, but two per night would be my limit.
Final Grade: 3.77, a B+. There are a few other local breweries that brew German-style lagers seasonally, but if I'm being honest, Black Gold seems to be better at these styles than the rest. This is a good stab at a festbier: I liked it more than their Lederhosen märzen, but I also tend to prefer festbiers over the märzen style, so that's hardly a surprise. In the end, they're both serviceable, malt-forward lagers worth trying if you're in the Petrolia area. I'll be back for more next autumn!
