473 mL can from the brewery; coded DCIP1253 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy golden-amber colour, its otherwise clear complexion clouded up by the presence of silty sediment. Situated atop is an inch of lumpy, soapy white head that slowly fades over the next five-plus minutes, eventually reduced to a creamy collar and sudsy cap; nice lace deposition, too. Not particularly aromatic, which is in line with my previous experiences with cold IPAs - I'm getting hints of orange peel and grapefruit, with suggestions of pine, guava and passion fruit.
Pilsner-like at the forefront, with grainy pale malts and bready sweetness backed by herbal hops and lemon zest. Hints of grapefruit and melon, concluding with pine resin, grapefruit pith and herbal, spicy hops; moderately bitter, with an herbal, earthy note lasting into the aftertaste. Medium in body, with lively carbonation that adds some prickliness to this brew's smooth mouthfeel. Great drinkability - I could probably knock back a couple of these in a row.
Final Grade: 3.87, a B+. I liked Black Gold's Cold IPA more than most, though I suspect a big reason for that is its pilsner-esque aspects: it almost starts out like a glass of Budvar, before the IPA characteristics kick in on the back half of the sip. It's my understanding that that's basically what a 'cold IPA' is supposed to be - a lager/pale ale hybrid - and if that's the case, this is a solid one. I don't get out to Petrolia more than a couple of times a year, but I would buy more of this given the opportunity.
