473 mL can from the brewery; coded STOU1079 and served barely chilled.
Pours an opaque oily black colour, topped with approximately one inch of bubbly, light tan-coloured head. After several minutes have passed, a beautiful coat of messy lace has been draped across the glass, with a thin collar and patchy cap floating upon the surface. Roasty, understated aroma that includes hints of chocolate, coffee beans and toffee, with suggestions of smoke and soil.
It tastes alright, but it's lacking in depth (even by session stout standards). Brown bread, light caramel and roasted grains are what I'm getting initially, joined later on by suggestions of cocoa and earthy, leafy hop bitterness. Mildly roasty finish with a touch of cocoa; dry aftertaste. Very light-bodied, with a thin, watery mouthfeel interrupted only by this stout's restrained carbonation. It's light enough that I could physically drink a few of these in a row, but would I want to?
Final Grade: 3.43, a B-. As far as session stouts go, 3rd Anniversary Stout is pretty middle-of-the-road in most respects - though its thinness does not do it any favours. It actually kind of reminds me of Guinness Draught: it has a similarly tangible facade of stoutiness, without the nitro gimmick, or much of anything else to back it up, unfortunately. I doubt I'll ever see this again, given that it's an anniversary beer, but if Black Gold brews another batch for some reason I'd likely take another kick at the can.
