473 mL can from the brewery; coded DSALL1345 and served slightly chilled. A sticker affixed to the label lists this beer at 4% and 8 IBU. Originally part of their one-off Discovery Series, this beer has been renamed "Sunnyside Ultra" and is now part of Black Gold's permanent lineup.
Pours clear pale yellow, kicking up just under a finger of loose, soapy white head; within ninety seconds, it has all but vanished. A thin collar and some wisps of film on the surface remain, with scant lace desposition - yep, looks like a light lager. Grainy, wholesome aroma with suggestions of floral hops, lemon and white bread.
Acceptable flavours - it's a little watery, but less insipid than a macro light lager. Grainy flavour profile; there's no ingredients list, so I don't know for sure if there's corn or rice in here, but I do get a little bit of a corn chip sweetness. Faint notes of floral hops and a lemony twang precede a grainy conclusion; hints of club soda, with an off-dry aftertaste. Light in body, with moderate carbonation that adds some spritz to this light lager's rather smooth, slippery mouthfeel. Good enough to get the job done.
Final Grade: 3.49, a B-. I can't imagine that Sunnyside Ultra is a huge draw for beer geeks visiting Black Gold, but for any small craft brewery, it's important to have something like this in your portfolio nonetheless. If you've just finished a round of golf, or plan to stay in the taproom for a while and drink several pints, this would probably be a good choice. That being said, Black Gold brews a few other low abv options that are more up my alley, including their cream ale, session IPA & blonde ale - so if this light lager doesn't do it for you, try one of those.
