every brewery in montana has to have a scotch ale i suppose, its the old cold smoke phenomenon, but this one is better than most, tons of flavor, on the dry side for the style, sturdy without being too heavy or strong, enjoyable on a rainy early fall evening. medium amber in color from the tap. immediately nutty to me in the nose, caramelized, toffee and almond notes, wet leaves, very autumnal, a hint of maple and brown sugar too, but its not really like that in the flavor, more bready and cooked rather than desserty. the yeast is there in aroma and flavor too, more english to me than anything, wet and earthy and adding quite a lot to this, classic but maybe a little bolder in this aspect than a lot of these. the body is only medium, the finish is pretty clean, the carbonation is average, and the alcohol is a little lower for the style, which i like here. this is a nice take on the style, probably one of their more popular beers given montanas affinity for them, well executed overall. this place is cool, a great addition to the bozeman beer scene!
