My taster at The Pilot Project immediately led to a purchase of a 4-pack. (That's their business tactic working, correct?)
I very much like Funkytown, its sense of humor and its ability to work in and interpret the Belgian tradition.
And I am glad to add this beer to BA and hope I do justice as its first review and rating.
First, the styling is not typical of Smoked Beers which, usually, almost overwhelm with smoke. Not so with It Is What It Was because the smoke is subtle. I went with Smoked Beers because that's how UnTappd tagged it. But if you think that Funkytown's creation is closer to a not-too-fruity wit, I'd agree; the rice in it is soft in the mouth like wheat. Or if you thought the mixed malt bill made it like a saison, I'd agree with that, too... especially since that is how it is styled over on BA's Is/Was page.
Second, this Collaboration with Is/Was makes this beer even more enjoyable to me as I am a fan of theirs with 16 uniques and growing. They are my favorite saison-maker that is under four years old.
Finally the beer... Designed as a table ale for spicy food, I put it to the test with two of Lillie's BBQ sauces slathered on Dr. Praeger's California Veggie burgers. The Western Carolina BBQ was tangy and What It Was handled the tang. (Lillie's Hot Smoky Memphis-style is so damn hot that only water probably might put out the fire.)
I have a 4-pack, so I will root around to find some Cajun/Creole food that What It Was was designed for. I will report back.
