473 mL can picked up at the brewery; best before Sept 15 2015 and served slightly chilled. This brewery is not exactly known for producing a lot of memorable IPAs, but I decided to grab two cans of this on a whim, anyway.
Pours a clear orange-amber colour, with a one-inch crown of fluffy, eggshell-white head seated atop. It recedes at a steady pace over the next five minutes or so, slowly transforming into a foamy, bubbly cap and collar, and leaving behind a fresh coat of lovely lace. The aroma has some mild orange citrus undertones, but it is the floral, piney aspects of the hop bill - this one uses Amarillo, Chinook and Columbus hops - that dominate over everything else. Quite earthy on the nose, with suggestions of caramel, berries and some boozy sweetness.
The taste follows the nose fairly closely. A backbone of biscuity malts and caramel sweetness is encountered right off the bat, with hints of apricot leading into the hop-forward tail end of the profile. There is a touch of orange citrus pith and perhaps even a nuance of strawberry - but a mixture of floral notes and resiny pine astringency plays a much more prominent role. Finishes aggressively bitter, with this resiny flavour clinging to the palate long after each sip has concluded. On the fuller side of medium-bodied, with restrained carbonation levels and a very smooth, somewhat slick/oily feel on the palate. Not at all refreshing, and while I consider myself a devout hophead, this is still a bit of a chore to finish.
Final Grade: 3.48, a B-. I've been reviewing a lot of IPAs over the past week or two, so it's possible that hop fatigue is starting to dull my palate - but I'm more inclined to believe that Wellington's Resinator just isn't a particularly good one. Nothing about this beer is standing out to me, and it has a few annoying traits - namely, the poorly-masked alcohol content, and the uninteresting hop profile - that are not doing it any favours. I will have no trouble finishing off the glass, but I don't think that I would return to this one in the future, or recommend it to others. Best left as a one-off, I think.
