750 mL swing-top bottle fitted with a regular crown cap; 2015 edition picked up at the brewery. Served at cellar temperature.
Pours a deep, clear ruby-red crimson colour, with two fingers of frothy, light beige-coloured head seated atop. It fades away steadily over the following five minutes; the inside surface of the glass becomes caked with lacing, with the eventual remnants being a wide, foamy collar and a few islands of patchy foam. Quite saccharine on the nose - toffee and caramel, with notes of maraschino cherry, fig, raisin and red licorice. Hints of nutty almond, baked apple and ethanol.
A solid strong ale. Flavours of caramel, toffee and toasted bread come through, alongside fruity notes of red apple, plum, cherry, fig and raisin. Becomes more bitter on the back end, as the hops start to punch through - there's a good dose of booze too, but it's tempered by the leafy, earthy, somewhat floral hop notes that bulwark the latter half. Fruity, bittersweet aftertaste with a hint of alcohol. On the heftier side of medium-bodied, with a soft, smooth, lightly carbonated mouthfeel.
Final Grade: 3.76, a B. Wellington's Yuletide Barley Wine is a pretty good strong ale. It reminds me slightly of their Iron Duke, but turned up to 11 - fruity and very malt-forward, with a generally agreeable flavour profile. Not as good as the BBA version, but still worth a look for any English-style strong ale enthusiasts out there. Thumbs up; this'll warm the cockles of your heart on a cold winter night, though I think I'd still prefer the Iron Duke over this one.
