750 mL bottle picked up at the brewery in early January; no bottling date, served slightly chilled. Described as an American brown ale with coconut and dates. I love one of those bonus ingredients, but am not real big on coconut.

Pours a deep mahogany brown colour with chestnut highlights - quite dark, but not quite opaque. One finger of frothy, beige-coloured head is soon reduced to a smooth, dense, creamy-looking cap and collar about half a centimeter high, with a thin ring of lacing produced at the same time. Brown sugar, caramel and chocolate cake on the nose, with prominent coconut notes accompanied by subtler hints of date and prune. Nutty and sweet, with suggestions of earthy, floral hops - pretty enticing, particularly if you're into coconut.

An interesting and flavourful beer, though perhaps a tad too sweet for my preferences. Bready malts, toasted coconut, caramelized sugar and chocolate cake flavours are apparent, joined by fruity notes of Medjool date, prune and fig by mid-sip. Suggestions of almond and flaked oat sweetness, leading into a balanced finish featuring lightly earthy, floral, somewhat leafy hops and a faint note of resin. Nutty-sweet aftertaste, with coconut lasting longer than anything else. Medium-full in body, with low carbonation levels that meekly agitate the surface of the palate, resulting in a silky-smooth, soft, very satisfying mouthfeel that might actually be the highlight of this beer, at least for me. A quality sipper, with decent drinkability.

Final Grade: 4.06, an A-. A collaborative effort between Wellington and the 2016 Queen of Craft Brew Team, Palm Trees and Zero Degrees is a well-made brew that I'd be willing to recommend to other BAs. As mentioned earlier, I'm not much of a coconut fella - but this unique brown ale still grew on me as I made my way through the glass. The hops are a little understated, IMO - it would be nice if they could stand up a little better against the saccharine qualities of the malts/dates and especially the coconut. Overall, this is an enjoyable, strong-ish brown ale that I'm glad I picked up when I had the chance.
