355 mL bottle, one of four included in their second 'Welly Rebooted' mixed pack. Best before Oct 10 2017 (way to rotate that stock, LCBO) and served slightly chilled.

Pours a foggy straw-yellow colour, supporting one finger of soapy white head that remains in place for more than five minutes. It recedes at a painfully slow pace, with a thick, creamy cap and collar surviving atop amidst a modest swath of lace. Looks like a lager that I'd like to drink, and that's about all I can ask for. Grainy pale malts give the aroma a doughy, honeyed sweetness, with suggestions of shortbread and grassy hops.

Old stock notwithstanding, this is still drinking nicely. The flavours are clean and balanced, but generally subdued; barley grain and bready malt sweetness are most prominent, followed up with hints of doughy biscuit. Grassy hay and noble hop earthiness round out the back end with a mild bitterness; this is soon subsumed by more pale malt flavours, which precede a clean, dry aftertaste. Light-medium body, with moderate carbonation levels that provide a decent bite at first, but soften out significantly over the course of the glass (in my case, 15-20 minutes). Smooth texture; very easy-drinking.

Final Grade: 3.87, a B+. Wellington's TGIF Helles Lager is a decidedly solid example of a domestic German-style pale lager; one that I wouldn't hesitate to consume again. I usually defer to the imports when I'm in the mood for this type of beer, but TGIF is one of a handful of Ontario-brewed craft lagers that I'd consider to be worthy substitutes. I'd easily take this over their Trailhead Lager, as well as low-end Munich lagers (e.g. Lowenbrau) - and if I should spot some fresh stock, you can be sure I'll make a point of buying more (and updating this review as needed).

355 ml bottle served cold into a pint glass. Part of Wellignton's most recent mixed pack. Cost came to $2.50 CDN for the bottle.

Appearance - Hazy unfiltered appearance. Very small fingernails worth of white head. Rich dark golden color otherwise.

Smell - Rather like buttery crackers, with a subtle earthiness. Upon repeat sniffs, very much like a well buttered fresh cracker or bread. Yum.

Taste - Clean and somewhat grainy with a touch of earthy hops and grass flavors thrown in. Some white pepper at the end. The graininess doesn't hold a candle to the nose.

Mouthfeel - Medium-light bodied. above average carbonation and a slight drying finish. Quite good, but unremarkable.

Overall -Despite a fantastic nose, TGIF Friday Helles Lager doesn't really have a lot to distinguish it from a host of other well constructed lagers. A serviceable companion for a mixed pack, but don't really expect to be blown away (except by the super buttery and crackery nose).
