355 mL bottle from the LCBO; the last of four included inside their ReBooted 3.0 sampler. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear medium gold colour, with one finger of soapy, bubbly white head gradually rising to the surface. It manages to hold together for a minute or so, but not much longer, crumbling away until only a thin collar survives in its place. The aroma is pleasant, with hints of bready, doughy pale malts, caramelized sugars and some spicy, grassy, slightly minty hops. Hints of apple skin; not bad at all, in fact it smells much like I'd expect a quality strong German-style lager to smell.
Tastes merely acceptable; it has a doughy, biscuity pale malt core surrounded by a lot of honey and caramelized malt sweetness. The back end is where the herbal, spicy hops finally begin to mount a comeback - but then the ethanol sweeps across the battlefield, leaving only a syrupy sweet, boozy aftertaste behind on the palate. Medium in body, with low carbonation and a slick, persistent texture. This small serving size is easy enough to put back, but I could see this lager becoming rather cloying in a larger format.
Final Grade: 3.52, a B grade. Wellington's Helles Bock is a pretty solid interpretation of this relatively uncommon style. Maibocks have never really been my thing, and this one is more or less what I'd expect of one - save perhaps the mouthfeel, which is a bit thicker and clingier than I'd prefer. It's a passable strong lager, but still the weakest offering in this sampler pack by a fair margin IMO. If you like the German maibock exports that show up around here (e.g. DAB and Holsten) then you will probably love this one, because it's slightly better.

355 ml bottle served cold into a pint glass. Purchased as part of the Wellington reboot Pack #3.
Appearance - An aggressive pour yielded a crystal clear pale golden beer with a finger of foamy but quickly receding white head. Minimal lacing, brilliant clarity and a thin wispy cap on top is all that lingers.
Smell - A little boozy with some dark fruits (plums) as the only other aroma besides a hint of grainy goodness.
Taste - Grainy, a little vegetative with a strong dose of booze and a surprisingly high amount of bitterness to close. Fruits don't show through and bitterness at the end is earthy and feels forced. A weird boozy sweetness lingers underneath.
Mouthfeel - Moderate crispness and nearing limp carbonation levels, body is heavy handed.
Overall - Not terrible, but a bit of a miss. Will enjoy other beers from this taster's pack more.
