473 mL can from the LCBO, included in one of their semi-recent sampler packs. Dated Nov 14 2019 and served at cellar temperature.

Pours dark but not opaque; its body is mahogany brown (as advertised), crowned with more than a finger of foamy, buff-tinged head. Within a few minutes' time, it has been reduced to a wide, creamy collar; a lovely pattern of webbed lace has also been left in its wake. I'm getting straight-up coffee grounds on the nose, joined up with (comparatively minor) notes of cocoa, roasted malts, brown sugar and a touch of ashiness. I love coffee as much as the next guy, but this really is kind of a one-note deal.

I was expecting a coffee bomb after sniffing this one... and that's certainly the preeminent flavour, but it's not as overpowering as expected. There's also a fair bit of roasted malt goodness - mostly in the form of cocoa, with caramelized sugars and a hint of burnt malt/ashiness also coming through by mid-sip; more coffee grounds through the finish and into the aftertaste, as well as a hint of green pepper. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation levels that give a decent bite to its texture. I finished my glass without a fuss, but one was more than enough.

Final Grade: 3.58, a B grade. Wellington has put out more than a couple of brown ales over the years, but Old Buddy isn't one that I'd place near the front of that pack. I'm a self-professed coffee addict, and I'd still take their County Dark Ale over this brown ale nine times out of ten; while I'm at it, their Terrestrial brown ales would also merit strong consideration. Simply put, this beer lacks depth - the coffee is basically the only game in town - but the aftertaste also began to bug me towards the latter half of the session. It's passable filler for a sampler pack, but a few tweaks are in order if they plan to bring this back.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. Part of the Wellington Mixed Pack #7.

Appearance - Dark brown with a slight reddish haze. Very light tan head that is loose and fluffy and stays awhile.

Smell - Wet and somewhat fresh coffee grounds for days. Plenty of coffee not a lot else.

Taste - Lots of coffee up front, but taste is a little off, some mineral action in the background and an odd peppery vibe in the aftertaste. Coffee part is pretty good, but the beer is rather one dimensional.

Mouthfeel- A little heavier than medium bodied, good expressive carbonation and a lighter-on-its-toes-than-expected finish.

Overall - A decent and nicely aromatic brew with good feel, however the flavor is a touch of a let down. Wouldn't be likely to purchase this on it's own. Also Coffee in beers may be the new thing. Twilight Hour from LOB is another recent arrival on shelves. Will be interested to see how many "coffee" beers make their way to market here.

A little too much coffee flavour.
