473 mL can from the LCBO, one of four brews in their Vol 9 mixed pack - this is a dry hopped version of their helles. Dated Oct 14 2020 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear, sunny golden-yellow colour, topped with an inch of foamy, sparkling white head that settles off over the next several minutes. It cakes the glass evenly with a fine coat of lace as it recedes, eventually leaving behind a creamy collar and thin cap - this is just a beautiful glass of beer. The aroma consists of clean, grainy pale malts and wheat, backed by notes of lemon, as well as subtler hints of grapefruit and apricot.
A solid lager - the dry hopping gives this brew a little bit of added character without distracting from its helles base. I'm getting lemon right off the bat, as well as a wheaty, grainy, crackery pale malt sweetness; this leads into a pithier finish that includes suggestions of white grapefruit, orange and grassy, floral, slightly earthy hop bitterness. Light in body, with average carbonation levels that lend a little bit of crispness to this rather smooth-textured lager. I could easily drink this one after another all evening, and I doubt I'd tire of it.
Final Grade: 3.96, a B+. I don't know if I'd say that Wellington's Crispy Forever is significantly better than the Helles Lager that it's built upon, but it certainly isn't any worse. The hops have given this one more of a citrusy, pithy feel vs. the helles, and it's a little bit more bitter as well - though not even close to the intensity that you might see in a DH IPA, or an IPL for that matter. Recommended to lager lovers, especially those who are looking for something a tad more citrusy than their usual fare.
