473 mL can from the LCBO; one of three new brews in Wellington's Vol 10 mixed pack. Dated Mar 18 2021 and served slightly chilled.
Pours hazy and translucent, its pale lemon drop yellow-hued body crowned with an inch of puffy, foamy white head that fades within five minutes or so. A frothy collar of soapy suds remains intact, as does a tight, smoothly sinusoidal band of lacing - looks good to me, with plenty of Galaxy hop character on the nose. White grapefruit, passion fruit and lemon come to mind, with additional hints of stone fruit and grassiness.
Light, fruity, low in bitterness but still moderately flavourful for only 4.1% - hints of crackery, wheaty grains provide a subtle backdrop for notes of grapefruit, lemon peel and peach. Suggestions of tropical fruit and pithy, grassy bitterness come through next, before a rather dry aftertaste - there's a touch of stone / passion fruit right after the gulp, but after that it dries off quickly. Light in body, with average carbonation; not quite thin, as the oats and spelt do help to fluff up the mouthfeel a bit more than most light pale ales. Easy to drink quickly, and probably in multiples.
Final Grade: 3.69, a B grade. I'm gonna call this a New England Pale Ale, since it has more in common with modern hazy pales or session IPAs than it does with your typical APA. It's a serviceable NEPA, but in the long run I'll probably forget about Phantom Time pretty quickly, as it doesn't really have any particularly attention-grabbing or otherwise interesting features going for it. This works fine as a random sampler pack inclusion, but I don't really see myself buying this as a single - there are just too many other choices in this category, and this one doesn't stand out at all.
