355 ml bottle served cold into a pint glass. Purchased as part of Wellington's seasonal mixed pack. Best before sometime in October 2017.

Appearance - Hazy honey brown color mixed with hues of amber. Nice finger of fluffy and frothy white head. Good retention and some streaky lacing left on the glass.

Smell - Some citrus notes initially, with pine mixed in. Dense malty backbone on the nose with lots of caramel.

Taste - Quite bitter with lots of pine notes. Not much citrus. Plenty of malt. A little too much bitterness. Some subtle sweet herbal flowery and strawberry flavored undertone.

Mouthfeel - Heavy bodied, sticky chewy although not sweet enough thankfully to be cloying. Carbonation is moderate.

Overall - Not a bad IPA, but liked the recent Upside IPA a little better even if that one didn't blow my socks off either.

355 mL bottle, 1 of 4 included in Welly's latest sampler pack. Best before Oct XX 2017 (the day has been smudged off), and served slightly chilled.

Pours a turbid, translucent orange-gold colour, capped with one finger of soapy white head that seeps away within the next five minutes. A frothy collar remains in place, with some attractive lace having been generated; looks fine to me. The aroma is a bit incoherent, with notes of caramelized malt sweetness overshadowed by spicy, resiny, and decidedly earthy hops. There are also some fruity notes, with orange, apricot and currants helping to give it a bit of depth. I won't lie, it's not the sort of aroma I'm looking for in an IPA.

Decent flavours; fairly malt-forward, reminding me of an English IPA at times - which is counter-intuitive, given that NA hop strains were used exclusively. Caramelized malts and toasted bread flavours are complemented with marmalade and apricot, with the 'hoppier' aspects relegated to the tail end of the profile. Muddled orange and pithy grapefruit soon give way to the potently resiny, pine-like flavours noted on the nose, and are followed up with an earthy, mildly spicy hop bitterness that lasts through the finish and into the aftertaste. Medium in body, with low carbonation that barely registers on the surface of the palate, giving this brew a smooth, slick, rather oily texture. Easy enough to knock back, but not something I'd want to drink several of in a row.

Final Grade: 3.52, a serviceable B grade. Wellington's Shangri-La IPA isn't too bad - in fact, it's probably one of the better IPAs they've put out - but I still think it falls short of the competition, for the most part. The hop flavours are a little jumbled to my tastes, if that makes any sense - a bit muddy, with the resiny/earthy notes largely drowning out the citrusy/fruitier aspects that several of these five hop strains (Citra, Chinook, Centennial, Amarillo, Simcoe) tend to impart. Alright, but I wouldn't go out of my way for more.

On draught at the UW Graduate House, a one-off IPA for OCB Week 2013.

Poured into a Welly glass. Bright caramel in colour, pushing into amber territory when held to the light. Good half inch of sturdy foam that lasts throughout the pint.

Nose is certainly on the floral end of the hop spectrum, as well as some mild pine and citrus notes. Interesting, definitely not the standard hop varieties from Welly. Caramel, malt, a bit of bread as well.

Tasty IPA that gives a much different result from what I had expected given the hop profile. Surprisingly floral and woodsy, rather than the tropical cone that I'm so used to. Still, very drinkable - enjoyable enough to have a few in an evening and be quite content. Carbonation is a bit sharp, medium bodied.

Hope I see this one again - good IPA that's not overly heavy and with a unique flavor.

Part of the "Welly One Off" series...

From the Brewer: "An American style India Pale Ale with notes of tropical fruit, lemon and pine. Dry hopped with Simcoe, Centennial, Amarillo, and Citra hops for an otherworldly aroma and a distinctly hoppy finish."

A - Finger of head dissipated in about a minute, honey golden in colour - quite cloudy, slight sediment floats.

S - Slight floral notes, notable pine touch, note of hoppiness, somewhat of a yeasty smell as well.

T - Instant floral hoppiness, certainly a note of pine - on the bitter side of things in general, but not for an IPA, aftertaste of a piney hop.

M - Very creamy, interesting consistency for an IPA, enjoyable.

O - Overall an interesting IPA - while not one of the best I have tried, certainly unique and worthy of a purchase. The creaminess of the beer is something that sets it apart from your average IPA.

(FYI - I picked this up direct from the Brewery - Brewed on June 8th, 2013 - Enjoyed on June 11th, 2013)
