Poured from 16oz can into my BeerAdvocate teku. Can is not dated.
Appearance: rich dark-amber hue with a clear body and a thin layer of light-tan foam atop.
Smell: rather sweet with a bit of caramel and a light phenolic character that is typical to the style. I’m getting hints of orange peel and cardamom — I don’t know what this was spiced with, only that it *was* spiced. But whatever it is, it’s nice; very wintry.
Taste: like the aroma, sweet, caramelly, and just a little bit phenolic. The spicing doesn’t quite pop as much as in the aroma, but again, I’d guess cardamom is somewhere in the works. There’s perhaps a hint of diacetyl, but again, that’s not out of whack for the style. It’s a nice dessert beer on a chilly evening.
Mouthfeel: medium-rich body with a moderate carbonation and a good creaminess.
Overall: I’m not always a Belgian dark or Belgian strong dark guy, but if you like those styles (or dubbels for that matter), this might really work for you. I like that the spice is not too overdone. To be honest, what I really want is 8oz of this, not 16, but somehow I’ll power through.
