pretty ambitious for this little operation to take on a doppelbock, and this time of year no less! cool to see on their menu, a favorite style of my wife, so she jumped right on this one. its a tad lighter than some of the classics, not insanely sweet and without a ton of body, there is also just a faint astringency in this that thins it slightly, i dont think its epic from a quality standpoint, but we enjoyed it anyway, a sturdy malt forward lager with plenty of german character. chestnut colored with decent clarity and shine, not as brown or viscous as some, average off white head on it settling pretty quick, somewhat relaxed carbonation on it overall, but i like the texture. neat layers to the grain, a hint of tobacco early, raisin and fig, then maple and brown sugar, not sweet on my teeth but rich anyway, baked bread and bran muffin and a likely longer boiled concentrated vibe, autumnal more than summery of course, german lager yeast is there but subtle, trace cocoa and roast too, more low end than it shows visually. a kiss of smoke before the fruity middle in the flavor, dark bread, toffee, trace acidity that is out of place for sure, but it doesnt totally break this down, red fruits and some sweetness late, cocoa powder, almond, fig. flavorful for not being too heavy, and it hides its alcohol pretty well. i dont mind the lighter body as the style goes either. this could use a bit of cleaning up, but its a pretty good effort for them, appreciate them tackling this!
