64 oz growler filled at the brewpub; it has been unopened in my fridge for a few weeks now. Served slightly chilled. I'm assuming its name is a play on words/reference to the eyeglass shop of the same name (around the corner from the pub), which has been there forever.
Pours a clear amber-bronze colour, kicking up more than a finger of smooth, foamy, off white-coloured head that falls back within the next several minutes. Plenty of messy, sticky lace is left behind, in addition to a bubbly collar of frothy suds surrounding a filmy cap - looks like an old school DIPA to me, and if that's the case then the nose is right on target. I'm getting leafy, floral hops, caramelized sugars and bready malts, with hints of grapefruit, orange and earthy pine resin; maybe a twinge of ethanol, but it's subtle.
No real surprises to speak of, but it's a serviceable DIPA - caramel sweetness and bready pale malts get things started, with flavours of grapefruit and orange not far behind. Earthy, resiny hop bitterness comes through towards the finish, with hints of berries, more grapefruit and malt sweetness lingering alongside; it's a little warming, but in the context of its abv, not all that boozy. Medium in body, with moderately low carbonation that gently nudges the surface of the tongue, resulting in a smooth, somewhat slick mouthfeel. Fair drinkability for its strength, so finishing this growler shouldn't turn out to be a slog.
Final Grade: 3.62, a B grade. The Eye Opener brought me back to my early craft beer drinking days, vaguely reminding me of my first couple of experiences with double IPAs - hoppy and bitter for sure, but countered with robust malt flavours layered over top restrained booziness. As suggested earlier, this is one I'd recommend mostly for old school hopheads vs. the haze bros; it also has some virtues if taken purely as an American strong ale, as it's got good balance and isn't especially hot.
