473 mL can picked up at the brewpub; dated Jan 18 2022 and served barely chilled.
Pours a lightly fogged golden amber colour, crowned with two fingers of soapy, foamy white head. It drops down to a lumpy quarter-inch cap within five minutes or so, caking the glass with glorious gobs of lace as it recedes - looks fantastic to me. Hints of grapefruit, strawberry and melon on the nose, with a little bit of creamy sweetness.
That hint of creamy sweetness extends to the flavour profile, which is otherwise hop forward - there's grapefruit and melon, with strawberry still figuring in prominently. Notes of bready, wheaty pale malts underneath, with strawberry, cream and honeydew coming through at the finish; faintly lemony, grassy bitterness precedes a fruity-sweet aftertaste that lingers. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that feels frothy and soothing on the tongue; soft, smooth, and shockingly quaffable for nearly 7%.
Final Grade: 3.97, a B+. It's not unusual for breweries to spruce up their milkshake IPAs with a fruity ingredient, but squeezing those fruity notes out of the hops instead is a viable alternative - maybe even a preferable one. Silverwood's is a quality example of the latter, utilizing Huell Melon and Belma hops (together with lactose) to trick the taste buds into sensing strawberry and melon milkshake. Mellow, subtle hop flavours that are unique, with minimal bitterness and fantastic drinkability - highly recommended for sure.
