Tallboy from the brewpub; dated Nov 12 2021 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear golden yellow with lots of sandy sediment strewn throughout its body; seated atop is one finger of foamy, soapy white head that lasts for a couple of minutes before dropping down to a frothy collar and filmy cap. Looks normal to me, and the aroma is similarly 'meh' - a little wheaty, with bready notes alongside hints of grainy pilsner malt and faint grassiness. Hints of ethanol and syrup.
I'm tasting grainy malts, biscuit and bready malt sweetness, with hints of golden syrup; this continues into the finish, where it is countered by a proper wallop of herbal, earthy, dirty hop bitterness. Medium in body, with moderately low carbonation that gently brushes against the tongue, lending a weak bite to this brew's smooth mouthfeel. Not crisp, definitely not refreshing - not necessarily a poor lager in and of itself, as I don't mind the flavours, but it's not what I want from a pils.
Final Grade: 3.32, squeaking out a B-. Ferry Dock is not bad, but it drinks more like a strong Euro lager than a pils - and that's not to say there isn't a decent noble hop presence here, as there is. It's just overshadowed by the malt and alcohol presence. Not a great pils IMO, but it is passable if taken as a strong lager. I'd drink this beer again, but only if I knew it was fresh - this eight month old serving just ain't cutting it for me.
