473 mL can from the brewpub; no canning date and served barely chilled. The second Two Water APA I've reviewed tonight: a rare two-fer for May two-four weekend. All this math is making me thirsty!
Pours a relatively clear golden-orange colour with sandy sediment hovering throughout the liquid. Gathered atop is nearly two fingers of smooth, foamy, off white-tinged head that settles off gracefully within five minutes, give or take; it leaves behind a beautiful lacey coat on the glass, as well as a frothy collar and filmy cap. Grapefruit and lemon on the nose, with bready, doughy malts and light sweetness; hints of floral, resiny hops, with a suggestion of tropical fruit.
It's a tasty pale ale - bready pale malts, wheaty grains and honeyed sweetness at the forefront, alongside mandarin orange and cantaloupe. Notes of lemon pith, stone fruit and grapefruit bitterness develop later on, with sweet citrus, melon and passion fruit at the finish; mildly floral hops persist into the aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderately low carbonation that imparts a little bit of crispness to this brew's otherwise smooth, slick mouthfeel. Good drinkability for its strength, but not something I'd stick with all night.
Final Grade: 3.71, a B grade. CPA is more of a modern take on the style when compared to Two Water's Almost the Capital pale ale (the beer I reviewed right before this). Relatively speaking, CPA leans more heavily on stone fruit and tropical fruit flavours (in addition to the citrus and floral hop elements), and is not particularly bitter overall. Honestly, I think Capital is more in my wheelhouse, but I still plan to return to CPA over the course of the coming summer months, as it's still a fine local pale ale.
