Tallboy from the brewpub; no packaging date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear golden-yellow colour, kicking up nearly an inch of loose, soapy, bubbly white head that fizzles within a minute or two; a frothy collar is the only remnant of note, with no cap and scant lace. Mildly wheaty, but other than that it's pure tropical fruit on the nose - guava is well-represented, with orange juice and passion fruit also coming through. Delivers as advertised thus far.
A serviceable fruited ale - hints of gritty, wheaty, crackery malt sweetness occasionally crop up, but POG flavours are dominant: passion fruit at first, with hints of mimosa, guava and finally some earthy, weedy hops towards the finish. The tropical fruit flavours persist into the aftertaste, somewhat cloyingly, and much to my chagrin. Light in body, with aggressive carbonation that remains prickly and harsh well into the course of the glass; moderate drinkability, but not something I'd care to session.
Final Grade: 3.27, a high C+. CAP Diamond POG just didn't do it for me. The tropical fruit flavours run roughshod over everything, while the base wheat beer fails to put up much resistance - an unbalanced, not especially beer-like brew that I didn't find entirely unappealing, but still rubbed me the wrong way for various aforementioned reasons. I don't see myself returning soon, but I wouldn't discourage others from giving this half-decent fruit beer a shot.
