Tallboy from the brewpub; no canning date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a lightly fogged golden-amber colour, with nearly an inch of smooth, foamy white head gathered atop. Within three minutes or so, it has been whittled down to a creamy collar and thin cap; good lace deposition comes later, as the level in the glass drops. Grapefruit on the nose, with wheaty, grainy pale malts as well as pineapple, apricot and passion fruit; hints of grassy, earthy hops also come through.
Grapefruit and orange zest flavours, with notes of stone fruit, pineapple and passion fruit developing shortly thereafter. The malt backbone is bready & wheaty, with lightly toasted grains and a touch of honeyed sweetness. Somewhat more bitter and resiny on the back end, with an earthy, floral bitterness that gives way to an aftertaste of grapefruit, stone fruit, resin and very slight alcohol. Medium in body, with moderately low carbonation that gently brushes against the surface of the palate, resulting in a smooth, relatively soft & limp mouthfeel. Very easy to toss back for 7.2%.
Final Grade: 3.89, a B+. Giants is a solid 'hybrid' IPA: not quite a bitter hop bomb, but not really a juicy, hazy modern IPA either, this was a very quaffable strong IPA that I am not inclined to complain about. About on par with their Silverwood's (milkshake) IPA - obviously the flavour profiles are quite different, but in terms of quality I think they're even. I'll pick up some more the next time I drop by Corunna, and would encourage others to try it as well - think of this as a local alternative to Boneshaker.
