473 mL can from the brewery; no canning date and served barely chilled.
Pours clear and effervescent, its golden yellow coloured body crowned with an inch of fluffy, foamy white head. Five minutes later, its remnants include a generous collar of suds as well as a thick, quarter-inch ring of lace. Earthy aroma with hints of orange peel, grapefruit, orchard fruit and woodsy, resiny hops.
I'm tasting grains, bready malts and a hint of biscuit sweetness at the forefront, with hop flavours becoming more prominent later on. Grapefruit, orange and lemon peel, with earthy, woodsy hop flavours developing at the finish and lingering into a slightly bitter aftertaste. Light in body, with aggressive carbonation that froths up in the mouth before it exhausts itself later in the session; smooth, soft mouthfeel with solid drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.65, a B grade. The Layoff is nothing to write home about, but it's still a serviceable, semi-local pale ale that I wouldn't mind drinking again. I doubt I'd go out of my way for more, nor would I describe Layoff as a stand-out amongst Two Water's other pale ales & IPAs, of which there are several. Still worth a shot if you're stopping by the brewery.
