473 mL can purchased at the brewery; no packaging date. Served barely chilled.
Pours opaque black, capped with one finger of loose, soapy tan-coloured head that disintegrates within a couple of minutes. A modest smattering of sticky lace is left in its wake, with a tight collar and a few wisps on the surface being the only other remnants. It smells of cocoa powder, roasted grains and milk chocolate, with hints of coconut and burnt sugar.
Not bad at all - a little flat at the forefront, but the back end is more rich and flavourful. It starts with subtle notes of cocoa and bready malts, followed by cocoa, dark fruits, coconut and milk sugar sweetness by mid-sip. Coffee and dark chocolate develop at the finish, with sort of an acrid, ashy aftertaste that becomes a little tiresome over the course of the glass. Medium in body, with low carbonation that gently tickles the surface of the tongue; feels silky-smooth, with pretty good drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.65, a B grade. Stag Island Oatmeal Coconut Stout is a little out of season at this point, but I still enjoyed my glass. It's on the sweet side, but considering that this is an oatmeal stout with coconut & lactose, I suppose that's to be expected. Other than that, I have no major complaints - pretty much on par with most of the local alternatives, in that it's fine on its own, but probably not worth going out of your way for.
