Tallboy from the brewery; no canning date & served slightly chilled. Named after a dental clinic, which is funny when you consider the fact that sour styles such as Berliner Weisse are bad for your tooth enamel.
Pours a foggy pale golden-yellow colour, sporting an inch of bubbly, soapy white head that melts away before my very eyes. Thirty seconds later, the surface is mostly barren, save for a thin collar that lasts a little while longer - no lacing to speak of, either, but this is all pretty normal with BWs in my experience. It smells of pink grapefruit, lactic sourness, lemon and mandarin orange, with hints of wheaty, bready sweetness.
Not bad at all: it's tart at the forefront, with lemon juice and lactic acidity giving up ground to notes of tangerine and pink grapefruit by mid-sip. Suggestions of wheaty bread and grassy hops are barely discernible amidst the citric sourness, which lasts into the finish before dissipating into a drying aftertaste. Light in body, with aggressive carbonation similar to that of a soda pop - crisp, biting and a little frothy, with a palate-scrubbing quality that leaves the taste buds ready for the next sip.
Final Grade: 3.86, a B+. Riverview is a solid Berliner weisse, with the tangelo imparting citrusy flavours and aromas that fall somewhere between mandarin orange and grapefruit - it's not exactly complex, but fruited sours rarely are. Quite approachable for what it is - i.e. it's very possible that someone who doesn't drink sour beer could enjoy this, under the right circumstances. I'm thinking a hot, sunny afternoon on the patio - no duh, right? I enjoyed this more than their gose, and would consider picking it up again.
