473 mL can from the brewery; no packaging date. Served barely chilled.
Pours a clear amber-orange colour, initially topped with two fingers of foamy, light beige-coloured head. Several minutes later, it has fallen back to a thin, frothy collar encircling a few patches of film on the surface; a meandering band of lace adheres to the glass. Candy apples on the nose, alongside hints of toasted bread, toffee and grainy malts.
It's alright - mildly sweet, malt-forward flavour profile, comprised of toasted grains, caramel, bready malts and candy apples. Just a touch of earthy hops on the back end, finishing with more grains and faint caramel, followed by an unusually dry conclusion. Light in body, with lively carbonation and a prickly mouthfeel; it's refreshing and very easy to gulp back.
Final Grade: 3.45, a B-. Two Water's Riverside is a passable light amber ale with plenty of room for improvement. Irish reds are not a style I tend to gravitate towards, but I've had enough to know what makes a decent one, and this is thinner & blander than most. That doesn't make it a bad beer - there's nothing inherently wrong with a light amber, and this one is actually hitting the spot on a cold, late autumn night, in a manner that a sweeter, heavier Irish red may not. Still, Riverside is very rough around the edges, which makes it difficult to recommend with genuine enthusiasm. At the very least, it's a step or two up from Rickard's Red.
