473 mL can from the brewery; no canning date. Served barely chilled.
Pours black as night, sporting one finger of tight, foamy, tan-coloured head that seeps away within four or five minutes. A thick curtain of lace is draped around the glass, with a creamy collar and filmy cap floating atop; looks good to me. Black cherry, brownie and dark chocolate combine for an aroma reminiscent of black forest cake; hints of coffee, treacle and raisin can also be discerned.
Sour cherry flavours come through early on, alongside notes of cocoa, dark chocolate and raisin. Hints of sweet black cherry do crop up later in the sip, as do notes of roasted grain and coffee; some metallicity is also present. Roasty finish, with baker's chocolate lingering into a bittersweet aftertaste. Medium-light in body, with assertive carbonation and a sharp, prickly mouthfeel that doesn't really suit the style IMO. Adequate drinkability, but one serving is plenty for this guy.
Final Grade: 3.44, an underwhelming B-. Two Water's Chocolate Cherry Porter didn't do much for me - more sweet cherry (& less sour cherry) might've helped. The chocolate aspect was also a little underwhelming, leaning more towards dark/bitter baker's chocolate, when a sweeter milk chocolate flavour might've been the better way to go. I dunno, it's not that this is a bad beer, it just feels kind of disjointed, and overall it's not all that satisfying to drink. I don't see myself returning to this, but I wouldn't discourage others from giving it a go.
