Tallboy from TBS; dated Apr 29 2024 and served slightly chilled.
Pours clear golden-amber, producing nearly two fingers of soapy, foamy white head that lasts for three minutes or so. It leaves behind lots of lovely, delicate lacing as it recedes down to a frothy collar and sudsy cap - looks great so far. A little sweet on the nose, with caramelized sugars and bready malts coming through alongside notes of candied orange peel, pineapple, earthy hops and cherries.
Hmm... it starts out fine, but the wheels fall off by the end of the sip. I'm tasting caramel and bready, wheaty malts atop notes of orange peel and grapefruit. Herbal, weedy, woodsy hops and earthy, resiny bitterness dominate the tail end, concluding with a dirty, vegetal flavour in the aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with average carbonation that lends some prickliness to this brew's smooth mouthfeel. Not especially drinkable, mostly due to the finish/aftertaste, neither of which I care for.
Final Grade: 3.26, a mediocre C+. If nothing else, Rough Stock IPA is aptly named: it's quite rough around the edges. I wouldn't call this a 'bad' beer - the robust malt presence is welcome, in that it helps to distract from the relatively harsh hop flavours, but it's not effective enough to allow me to fully enjoy the glass. I'd honestly suggest you take a pass on this one, though if actual fresh stock shows up at some point I'd be happy to give it another try.
