Canned 40 days ago > poured into an Ale Apothecary tulip.
advice (imho) - let it warm a bit from refrigerator temps.
Like other Van Henion btrews, this one displays their skill in producing relatively low ABV German-style beers.
The can states "Fear not the robust nature of traditional dark beers". ...this beer warrants/earns that cautionary note. It's 'light' but with a definite malt goodness that a traditional 4.9 abv lager would probably not possess.
A perfect winter diversion from heavier winter malt-forward higher ABV brews.

Taster at brewery. Dark brown pour, creamy off-white head, lacing. Aroma is light roasty malts. Taste is roasty, burnt toast, mild sweetness and a mild bitterness.

6 pack purchased from American Market in Salem OR.
$11.99
wow this is old,. Canned 7 months ago.
OH well let's see how bad.
Pours a coca -cola style dark brown. with a lovely thick and frothy lighter tan head.
Aroma. it pretty subdued. Caramel and slight brown bread.
Taste is actually better. Caramel, treacle , cream and slightest hint of ash. Very good.
Mouthfeel is rather good, creamy/silky yet still leaves a bite in the end.
Overall, very pleasant. Was expecting the worst given the age, I hope to taste this younger son.

Dark brown color. Slightly nutty aroma. Metallic aroma. Low complexity-- basic brown, roasted flavor. Metallic aftertaste. Low bitterness. Medium body. Medium/low astringency. I bought a 6-pack, and I think I liked it out of the can more than pouring it out into the glass for some reason. Metallic aspects seem more accentuated tonight. Given the price point of $13, I'd try something else before getting this one again.

Brewery: Van Henion Brewing
Location: Bend, OR
Style: Schwarzbier
ABV: %4.9

My good friend was working in Bend, and I got this late-night text saying, "Dude, you gotta try this beer." My friend is new to the beer scene, a sour beer related to vinegar. For him to tell me piqued my curiosity. I have consumed a few, and he was right; you must try this. I used a pint glass and served this beer at 44 degrees. The pour created this frothy and creamy light tan two-fingered head. Excellent head retention, slowly dissipating, leaving bits of lacing on the glass. I am charting the dark brown beer color around SRM 26 with light ruby hues. The appearance is above average, a beautiful beer.
Nosing the glass, I smell chocolate, coffee, light Maillard, roasted malts, bready, a touch of char, and a light floral essence.
I taste bready, light char, coffee, chocolate, light Maillard, roasted malts, a soft floral note, and earthiness.
The mouthfeel is creamy yet dry. The body is medium-light, with light carbonation and a pleasant finish.
A fantastic example of a Schwarzbeir. An easy to quaff on a warm breezy summer night. I am glad I got to try it; thank you, my friend.

Look: Pitch black on the pour and in the glass but ruby-red held to light with a silky khaki head that builds up and slowly settles to a lid, leaving great lacing behind
Aroma: Light roast, warm brown bread, wafts of chocolate, toasted bread, roasted cereal grains, and some earthiness
Taste: Opens up with a swath of bread-driven malt and some nice dark chocolate notes that develop nice depth. Roast and cereal grains are highlighted next, along with some earthy hop character and closes with more chocolate and bread
Mouthfeel: Full but light, clean, fairly smooth, medium-high carbonation, and a clean and smooth finish
Overall: This is really tasty stuff. Schwarzbiers are my biggest sucker style and I’ve liked what these folks have been brewing thus far so really wanted to try this one and it did not disappoint. A ridiculously tasty Schwarz here with great roasted barley presence, earthy hops, and the expected lager feel and finish. This will not be my last sixer and highly recommended

L: Dark brown body, very even, dense head.
S: A bit Pilsner like, sweet hops, raw dough, roasy notes, wheat.
T: Follows the nose. Upfront cracker and Pilsner malt, then grassy and fruity hops in the body, some very nice smokey notes, and a bit of nuts on the finish.
F: Smooth, moderate carbonation, easy going down.
O: Very enjoyable complexity while remaining easy to drink. Everything it should be.
