Initially, I had a difficult time deciding if this beer was supposed to taste like it did. Though I certainly have room for further research on alts, I cant recall ever trying one that was quite this pungent and enigmatic. Perhaps it was that distinct sulfury essence that is sometimes associated with this style.
Eventually I concluded that my pint of Black Forest was supposed to taste this way, I just didnt particularly care for it. It initially presented dark mahogany and clear with a full finger of head. The head soon faded leaving no lace to speak of but a curious (and cosmic) spiral of head, the likes of which Ive never seen before. My Black Forest had a meaty, bitter flavor that was almost burnt and had rauch-like leanings. The smoky ambience of The Cider Mill Lounge didnt contribute much to the beers aroma.
This beer is challenging to enjoy. But dont let my failure to meet this challenge stop you.
