Notes: The mellow malt in this Imperial Pilsner is married with a clean sharp bitterness from a blend of four hop varieties. Crisp and refreshing, with a touch of delicate noble hops to linger on the palate.

Bottle: standard 330mL brown bottle with a simple but stylish label.

Appearance: pours golden yellow with a fluffy white head that drops to a half-finger. Patches of lace, with fine carbonation visible. Looks like your standard lager.

Aroma: some sweet pilsner grain with lemon and grass hops. Standard pilsner aromas, apart from a big dose of unspent alcohol - very invasive.

Taste: a fairly flat palate of the same flavours found on the nose, with that big alcohol fug that makes this okay but not great. Quite flat.

Aftertaste: drops away fairly quickly, again quite flat. I would have expected more from 7% ABV.

Mouth feel: quite flat on the palate - I think this is where the problem resides. Not enough carbonation, though the moderate body is about right.

Overall: I'm not sure I know how to sum up this beer, but here goes. They've tried to make a flash 'low-carbonation evening sipper' and ended up with a high-alcohol, low body, flat pilsner. A pretty awful compromise. I'm starting to get over Monteith's Brewer's Series very quickly.

A - Pours a golden straw colour with frothy head that dissipates quickly to a thin film.

S - Mild citrus notes including lemon, pineapple, sweet candy, earthy, grassy but nothing really that prominent.

T - Earthy flavours like the nose , slight citrus with sweet malt that gives it a slightly bitter/tangy finish

M - Light body with low carbonation

O - Drinkable but very average and bland that lacks any real punch.

What is Monteith's Imperial Pilsner you say? The label describes it thusly "The mellow malt in this Imperial Pilsner is married with a clean sharp bitterness from a blend of four hop varieties". Personally I'm starting to believe brewers are over-blending beer ingredients, I mean 4 hop varieties, where does it end? [5,688 hop varieties in one beer is where it ends and it's called "Dok Hops Megabrewpocalypse"!]

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a tall stein.

A: Clear golden body with a chalk head that started out 4cm tall and finished at around 1cm. Meh, Pilsners, Lagers, they all look alike.

S: Confusing and boozy like a bad ex-girlfriend, this brew is a jumble of pleasant and objectionable aromas - spicy hops, vegetal matter, grassy and earthy aromas combine. It's an ugly stepchild of a brew so far (apologies to any ugly stepchildren out there who might be reading this review).

T: Sweet malt, and lot's of it... the rest as they say is history... well not actually, but I can't go a single review without a popular turn of phrase or breaking the forth wall and addressing the audience, shut up you like it! [see!] This brew suggested four hops, and not just any hops - noble hops, which is disappointing for a malt-bomb. Yes the hops are faint pantomime characters in the background vying for my attention not realising that the malt is upfront and centre stealing the show... that evil malty bastard.

M: Medium bodied with an almost flat carbonation.

D: The hops become a little more apparent towards the end with a lingering bitterness, however this beer is all about sweet chunky malt, not mellow at all, bad label! Aside from the lying label which all beer drinkers know all too well, this brew is a bit of a mixed bag. I for one don't mind that it's a malt not hop dominated lager, but I find it a bit boring and overpriced. I guess one plus is that it doesn't taste 7.00% ABV. So yeah, small victory there.

Food match: Reuben sandwich with a side of fries... cant believe I'm still randomly picking foods and matching them with beers and no one has pulled me up on this shit.
