Crowler purchased at the source on their last night of business. I believe it was for $6.
Poured into the glass, it was the expected very dark brown, virtually black, for the style. Good sized khaki colored head that left rings of khaki foam on the sides of the glass.
Roasty dark malt aroma. A little bit of herbal-like aroma from the hops as well.
Roasty dark maltiness up front, imparting flavors of coffee and molasses. A very slight herbal, grassy hop flavor undercurrent was present as well. A bit of a char on the back end.
Medium bodied, with a coating but not overly creamy mouth feel.
This was a really nice non-imperial, non-adjunct, non-barrel aged stout. These kind of stouts don't get celebrated nearly enough. This is an excellent one. I would absolutely drink this again if given the opportunity. Incidentally, when I entered this into the database, I apparently got the ABV wrong. It is 5.2%, not 5%. RIP Common Language. I hope to someday have something in the future brewed by Charlie, who I believe is headed back down to his old stomping grounds in California now that CL has closed.
